When To Toss Your Makeup

Are your still holding on to that tube of lipstick that you once bought when you were in college... or even High School? Is that eyeshadow so worn down that your trying to use the last bits around the edges of the pan? If this sounds like you, then I hate to break it to you, but you have Beauty Separation Anxiety! Don't worry.. your not alone, but unfortunately, it can be unsanitary to hold on to your makeup forever as oil and bacteria can build up on products.

So how do you know when it's time to throw out your old makeup? Most makeup packaging includes a small symbol that tells you how long the product will last after opening. The symbol looks like a jar with the lid open and it will tell you the number of months, from when you opened the product that it is good for. If you can't remember when you opened your cosmetics, try marking the date on your products.
Sometimes cosmetic products don't contain this symbol to tell you when it's good until, but you can follow this guideline that I have here for you guys!!

Liquid and Cream Foundations - Lasts up to 2 years.
Concealer - 2 years
Powder - 2 years
Mascara - Up to 6 months (usually when it changes in consistency or becomes very dry)
Lipstick - 2 - 3 years
Eyeshadow - 2 - 3 years
Eyeliners - Up to 3 years
Blush - 2 - 3 years
Moisturizer - 2 years
Eye Cream - 6 months
Sunscreen - 2 years (after the exp. date, toss it -- it's no good and doesn't give you the proper SPF needed)

NOTE:  When in doubt throw it out IF your makeup is: crumbling, flaking, to stiff, to hard, smelly, gooey, oils are separating, clumpy, dried out, lumpy, scratchy, changes in consistency and colour. -- TRASH IT!!

So get out all your makeup and cosmetics and start throwing out all that old makeup and start fresh! This also gives you an excuse to go shopping for new makeup!! Have fun girls!!

Quick Makeup Tip

Thinning Brows??

No Problem! For a quick fix at home, just fill them in lightly using a feathering motion with any pencil or any shadow that is close to your hair colour. When filling in your eyebrows with shadows, its best to apply with an angle brush and lightly fill them in using the same technique as a pencil.

For a longer lasting result, getting them tinted will help colour in those light, hard to see hairs, that will last up to 4 - 6 weeks!

What is this white spot??

A lot of people ask me about these "white spots" that appear on their nails. Well for all of you wanting to know, it's a nail condition called leukonychia (leu-ko-nych-i-a), in which white spots or patches appear on the nails. There are many reasons in which this happens such as air bubbles that form between the nail and the nail bed, a bruise or another injury to the nail, zinc deficiency or an incomplete hardening of the nail, all which means that these areas are not adhering to the nail bed. It cannot be corrected nor can you just buff it away, but it will grow out. If you don't like the look of it, wearing nail polish is a simple fix in covering them until it's grown out.

Tips and Tricks Before and After your Waxing Session

Waxing is a great way to remove unwanted face and body hair because it leaves your skin smooth and hair free for weeks at a time (an average of 3-6 weeks, depending on how fast you hair growth rate is, which will decrease with regular waxing)

A lot of people are afraid to even try waxing, and won't even consider it at times because of the pain involved. But shaving constantly and having stubbly re-growth to contend with, and using messy depilatory creams aren't really that much fun either. With waxing, your hair grows back without the stubbly growth, and sometimes often grows in thinner and more fine with regular waxing.

Although there will be some discomfort involved, the pain is often not as awful as you imagine. In fact, it is over quite quickly and with regular waxing visits, the pain doesn't seem as bad for many. So when you get the courage to give it a try, you can realize that it's a practical way of removing hair!

Here are some hints and tips for you BEFORE your waxing appointment (to make it a little less painful!):

   1.  First things first.... make sure your have enough hair grown out before getting waxed. Your hair should be about 1/4" grown, as the wax may not pick up the hairs if it's any shorter. Now if the hair is longer than 1/4", it will be more painful to pull out, so for best results it's easy just to trim the hair.
   2.  If you are extremely sensitive, you can take an Advil, Asprin etc. before your appointment to help with the pain.
   3.  For women, try to avoid booking your appointment around your period. Instead, try booking a week after your finished menstruating, as otherwise you may find the pain to be more uncomfortable.
   4.  Exfoliate!!! Exfoliating helps get rid of the dead skin, which can also help lift up all the hairs, so its easier to wax off the shorter ones.
   5.  And last but not lease... before waxing make sure you are not using any medications or creams that causes thinning of the skin (usually acne medications and or anti-age products) as it can cause extreme irritations and can lift a layer of skin. Usually these medications and creams contain Retin-A or Glycolic Acid, so the only thing I can suggest is to stop using the product 2 days prior, and start again 2 days after waxing. If your not sure or if you forget, I always make sure clients fill out a client card before waxing to see if you can qualify to get waxing done that day.

Alright, so now after you've had your waxing done, you may notice a bit of redness and bumps, but they will disappear within a few hours. Here are some hints and tricks to follow AFTER your waxing to maintain your beautiful wax job!!

   1.  Avoid going in direct sunlight and tanning bed for about 24 hrs. as this will cause burning and discoloration.
   2.  Do not bathe or shower in hot water. (will sting)
   3.  Avoid exercising and extreme heat after waxing as the heat and sweat can build up bacterial and can cause irritation and rashes since the pores will still be open.
   4.  Avoid using harsh lotions, soaps, perfumes and deodorants on treated areas for about 24 hours, instead apply a soothing lotion on the treated area such as Aloe Vera and use a cold compress if needed.
   5.  After 24 hours, when the skin has calmed down, use a loofah sponge and exfoliate to prevent ingrown hairs, and continue to use daily moisturizers!!

Hopefully these hints and tricks should help you before and after your waxing appointment!! If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask or if you would like to book for a waxing appointment, call Jess at 519.323.4387 and check out the service menu for all waxing services and prices!!

Nail Polishing Tricks

Ever apply polish at home and only have it last for a couple days? Wish it could last at home like it does when you go for a manicure? Well, fear not! Here are some tips and tricks for applying polish at home, so it can last like it does after a mani!

1.   When polishing your nails, start with a base coat. They create a sticky adhesive for the nail polish to adhear to. The base coat will help protect and strengthen your nails. Base coats contain neutrients such as aloe, vitamin E, and or calcium, which all help to prevent dry brittle nails, splitting and breakage. Base coats will also help from staining your nails when using a dark colours.

2.   Finish with a top coat. Not only do they add gloss and sheen to the nails, but they also act as a  protective barrier, preventing the polish from chipping and fading. If you want your polish to last longer after a manicure, apply a top coat every day.

3.   When applying nail polish, you should apply in several thin coats, instead of thicker coats. 2 coats usually work best, but some may need 3 coats. After your last coat of nail polish, lightly skim your brush across the top of your nail, this help in preventing chipping.

4.   For faster drying, simply run your hands under cold water to speed up the drying process. It may look like your nail polish is dry, but remember, nail polish usually take a full 12 hours to fully cure. (dry) So to prevent your nail polish from getting all dinged up and smeared, take it easy for a bit and wear gloves when doing your household choirs.

5.   Don't shake your nail polish before using. I know it may be a habit to some of you, but when you shake your nail polish it causes air bubbles in the bottle, which can end up on your nails. Instead, roll the bottle upside down in the palm of you hands. This will make those small metal balls in the bottle roll around and mix the polish up before you apply it.

6.   If you accidentally dinged up your nail while waiting for it to dry, an easy fix is to apply a little nail polish remover to your finger tip and gently rub the area to smooth it back out, then reapply with polish if needed.
